Pokemon Unbound – Meet The Starters
Pokémon Unbound lets you choose from three starter Pokémon:
- Gible (Dragon/Ground)
- Beldum (Steel/Psychic)
- Larvitar (Rock/Ground)
Here’s a breakdown of what each of them can offer:
Starter #1: Gible

Gible is a Dragon/Ground type that evolves into one of the fiercest and most powerful monsters in the franchise, Garchomp.
If you like a super aggressive playstyle that’s focused on powerful physical attacks, this starter will suit you well.
Strengths
- High speed and attack stats.
- Early access to strong physical moves.
- Effective against many early-game opponents.
- Turns into a freaking Garchomp!
Weaknesses:
- Ice-types
- A bit squishy until it reaches its final evolved form.
Should You Pick Gible">
If you’re looking for a high-risk, high-reward Pokemon that can sweep teams later on, Gible is who you’re looking for.
Its high speed and high attack would make Gible a great attacker and is perfect for those who want to end fights as fast as possible.
You can compromise with its weakness by catching a Pokemon that can take care of Ice-types.
Starter #2: Beldum

Beldum is a Steel/Psychic type that evolves into Metagross. Its high defense stats offer a more defensive playstyle, focusing on bulk and tanking hits.
But don’t let Beldum’s defensive playstyle fool you as it can also pack a punch with physical moves.
Strengths:
- Resistant to many types.
- High defense and decent attacking power.
- Evolves into Metagross.
Weaknesses:
- Limited offensive moves in the early game.
- Mediocre speed makes progress slower.
Should You Pick Beldum">
If you are okay with slower progress early in the game and want a solid and competitive monster in Metagross, this is your starter.
But if you don’t want slow matches in the early game, you should avoid it.
Starter #3: Larvitar

Larvitar is a Rock/Ground type that evolves into Tyranitar, a powerful mixed attacker and tank.
This Pokemon provides a good balance of offense and defense. It has a wide movepool early on and can learn almost all TMs.
Strengths:
- Versatile and well-balanced starter.
- Great typing and immunity.
- High physical and special attack.
Weaknesses:
- 4x weak to Grass 2x to Water
- Sandstream animation makes progress slower.
Should You Pick Larvitar">
If you’re looking for a well-rounded and versatile starter that can tank hits while dealing solid damage, Larvitar is for you. Just make sure you pick up a counter to those grass types.
So Who’s the Best Starter For Pokemon Unbound?
So, you still can’t decide which starter to pick up? Here are a few words of wisdom from your Unbound seniors.
Based on various online Poke-communities, the best starter for Pokemon Unbound is Gible.
Here are clear-cut reasons why:
Sweeping Potential

Once this tiny dragon evolves into Garchomp, it becomes one of the most lethal offensive threats in the game.
Garchomp’s stat spread turns it into a top-tier physical sweeper with one of the fastest speeds in the game.
Garchomp Base Stats:
- HP: 108
- Attack: 130
- Defense: 95
- Special Attack: 80
- Special Defense: 85
- Speed: 102
Garchomp also has access to powerful physical moves. With moves like Earthquake, Dragon Claw, and Crunch, you can destroy and even one-hit a long list of opponents.
None of the other starters can provide this much attacking power.
If you want to be a little more risky, you can equip Stone Edge or Fire Blast and take those ice-types by surprise and one hit KO them. That’s how scary Garchomp is offensively.
Extra Mega Slot

The other two starters are pretty strong with their Mega Form. Metagross benefits from mega evolution by gaining a giant boost in speed and attack, solidifying its offensive prowess.
Meanwhile, Tyranitar increases its already monstrous attack and defense stats.
On the other hand, Garchomp gives up some of its defenses to become unimaginably stronger offensively, raising both its attack and special attack stats. However, this is overkill for Garchomp since it can already dominate in its standard form.
While this form makes him an unstoppable mixed attacker, Garchomp doesn’t need mega-evolution because he is already strong. This opens up an extra slot in my team for a mega that benefits more dramatically from the evolution.
I usually go with Mega Gengar for insane special and physical offensive capabilities. But if you do decide to go with Mega Garchomp, there’s nothing that can stand in your way.
First Gym Advantage

Since the Beta and newer version of this ROM hack was released, the first gym in Pokemon Unbound is the Dresco Pokemon Gym, led by a grass-type expert. That automatically kicks Larvitar out of the conversation who is 4x weak to grass types.
Beldum, on the other hand, isn’t weak in this gym but can’t do much against them offensively. Gible, however, gets access to Fire Fang earlier in this version and can melt through the gym easily.
If you’re worried about the ice types in Route 1 and Icicle Cave, Gible’s Metal Claw is more than enough to take care of them.
Final Verdict
Its overwhelming offensive power, already strong standard form, and the advantage it brings in the first gym make Gible the best Pokemon Unbound starter.
In the end, however, your personal choice and play style are more important than the opinion of other Trainers, no matter how good and logical they are. So choose the one that suits you best.
