What Are Heart Scales?

Heart Scales are pretty, heart-shaped scales described as extremely rare as they come from the shed scales of Luvdiscs. It glows faintly with all the colors of the rainbow.

In Pokemon X and Y, a Heart Scale is given to a Move Reminder to make a Pokemon relearn a move it forgot or didn’t learn previously.

Heart Scales can be harvested from Luvdiscs. There are various ways you can get Heart Scales, but this farming method is the most efficient.

This method utilizes a Pokemon with the move Thief and Frisk ability, an Old Rod, and lots of Luvdiscs.

Step 1: Get the Old Rod

Pokemon x and y - getting the old rod in ambrette town

You can’t go fishing for Luvdiscs without a Rod. Go to Ambrette Town and enter the aquarium.

On the bottom floor, there is a fisherman who will give you an Old Rod for free if you talk to him.

You can’t use a Good Rod or Super Rod because these fishing rods reel in stronger Pokemon. Luvdiscs bite to the Old Rod only.

It is possible to encounter Luvdisc with a Good Rod or Super Rod in certain locations, though other Pokemon might also appear. However, for farming Heart Scales, using the Old Rod is the best method.

Step 2: Get a Heart Scale Hunter Pokemon

Pokemon x and y - noivern with frisk ability and move thief

To get Heart Scales from Luvdiscs, you need a Pokemon who knows the move Thief. This lets your Pokemon steal the held item of an opposing Pokemon.

When you use Thief on a wild Luvdisc that’s holding a Heart Scale, your Pokemon can take it as its own held item.

But if you want to make the farming process more efficient, choose a Pokemon who also has the ability, Frisk.

Frisk allows you to check if the opposing Pokemon is holding an item. You can use this ability to run from item-less Luvdiscs, since they only have a 50% chance of having a Heart Scale.

My favorite Frisk/Thief Pokemon in Pokemon X and Y is Noivern. Put that Pokemon in front of your party and you’re good to go.

Step 3: Fish For Luvdisc

Pokemon x and y - fishing for luvdisks

Now that you have everything you need, it’s time to get some Heart Scales.

Luvdiscs can be found in Route 8, Route 12, Shalour City, Ambrette Town, Azure Bay, and Cyllage City. Go to any of these fishing spots and start fishing with your Old Rod.

Once you reel in a Luvdisc, send out Noivern or your Heart Scale Hunter Pokemon.

If the Luvdisc is holding one, a message will appear that Frisk has identified Luvdisc’s Heart Scale. If no message appears, you can just run to save time.

Next, use Thief to take the Heart Scale. Take note that this will only work if your Pokemon is not yet holding an item.

So, make sure to take the Heart Scale or any other item from your Pokemon before encountering another Luvdisc or Thief won’t work.

Other Ways of Getting Heart Scales

  • Coumarine City post-game. Show Tierno a Pokemon with his requested dance move.
  • Using Rock Smash on a rock.
  • Using a Dowsing Machine on Route 8 (recurring item)

How to Use Heart Scales in Pokemon X and Y

Pokemon x and y - selling heart scales to the move relearner

Now that you know how to get Heart Scales in Pokemon X and Y and you have a boatload of them, how do you use the scales for relearning moves?

First, go to Dendemille Town and enter the house located northeast of the Pokemon Center. Inside you’ll find two old people.

The male is the Move Deleter who can delete any move, even HMs, from your Pokemon.

The female is the Move Relearner. She can teach your Pokemon any move it could’ve learned previously at lower levels in exchange for one Heart Scale.

For example, you replaced one of your Pokemon’s strong moves with a useless one. The Move Relearner can reteach that move to your Pokemon.

Another reason for tweaking your Pokemon’s moveset is if you have evolved your Pokemon too late, and it didn’t learn its important moves by leveling up.

For example, you evolved your Eevee into Sylveon at Level 40 and missed the chance to learn Moonblast. With one Heart Scale, you can relearn that move from this old lady.

Conclusion

Now you know how to get Heart Scales in Pokemon X and Y. Just follow the simple steps in this farming method, and you’ll be swimming in Heart Scales in no time.

Then, you can reteach your Pokemon all the moves it needs to become a reliable pillar on your team.
