Pokemon Unbound is known for adding fresh and exciting elements to the typical Pokemon experience.

One of them is the Redwood Gym, which leaves players puzzled and dumbfounded with the surprises it packs.

From its quirky rooms inspired by different places from your adventure to the gym battle itself, this gym is unlike any other. But the most confusing part is the puzzle.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the Redwood Gym so you can get that Time Badge.

The Redwood Gym: A Preview

Redwood gym interior

The Redwood Gym is a bug-type gym led by Gym Leader Benjamin. Conquering this gym means earning your final gym badge in Borrius, the Time Badge.

This gym’s theme is about going back in time, a perfect time to reminisce about the trials you went through before your final League challenge.

The gym has rooms with trainers and buttons that need to be pressed in the correct order to unlock the gym leader’s room.

The battle with Benjamin also features a unique mechanic where your Pokemon doesn’t directly faint but devolves instead.

Now, let’s find our way to the gym leader.

Pokemon Unbound Redwood Gym Puzzle Guide

The Redwood Gym features a puzzle that needs solving before you can enter the gym leader’s room.

This puzzle involves pressing the buttons on rocks at the center of each room in the correct order. But first, you have to defeat all the Trainers.

Each of them will give you hints about the proper order of pressing the buttons, but here’s an easier way to sort things out.

The gym follows a reverse theme, so you have two choices here:

  1. Trace back the themes of the room. Each trainer in this gym is in a room that replicates the major story dungeons you’ve been through. All you need to do is go backward in your adventure and retrace the places you’ve been to. That would be Crystal Peak → Thundercap Mountain → Cinder Volcano → Icicle Cave. Press the buttons in that order, and the gym leader’s room will be unlocked.
  2. Go from oldest to youngest. If you haven’t noticed already, the trainers in this gym are ages apart. This is the easiest and my go-to method of solving the Redwood Gym puzzle. Just go from the oldest trainer to the youngest and press the buttons in that order. That would be elderly Expert Tizzy → adult Ace Trainer Daisy → teenager Bug Catcher Curtis → child Ninja Boy Fuller.

By pressing the buttons in this order, you can open the gym leader’s room and finally battle Benjamin. Your gym challenge, however, is just beginning.

Trainer Rooms
Elderly Expert Tizzy/Crystal Peak Elderly expert tizzy/crystal peak
Adult Ace Trainer Daisy/Thundercap Mountain Adult ace trainer daisy/thundercap mountain
Teenager Bug Catcher Curtis/Cinder Volcano Teenager bug catcher curtis/cinder volcano
Child Ninja Boy Fuller/Icicle Cave Child ninja boy fuller/icicle cave

How to Beat Gym Leader Benjamin

Gym Leader Benjamin is armed with bug-type Pokemon. The unique twist of this gym battle is devolution. This means your Pokemon won’t faint directly after losing all their HP, but will regress into its previous evolution instead.

The gym’s debuff effect weakens the stats of your Pokemon and makes them forget some moves as they devolve. However, all Pokemon will return to normal after the battle.

Gym Leader Benjamin’s Pokemon

Here are the Pokemon that you should prepare for:

  • Araquanid (Water/Bug) – Devolves into Dewpider
  • Mega Scizor (Bug/Steel) – Devolves into Scyther (Bug/Flying)
  • Drapion (Poison/Dark) – Devolves into Skorupi (Poison/Bug)
  • Butterfree (Psychic/Bug) – Devolves into Metapod, then Caterpie (Bug)

As you can see, Benjamin is no pushover, as his Pokemon aren’t just bugs that are easy to squash.

They all have dual typing, and they resist their usual weaknesses. Drapion isn’t even a bug type if we don’t count his pre-evolution.

However, he shouldn’t be much of a threat as long as you come in with the right Pokemon and use the best moves against his team.

After defeating him, he will give you the Time Badge and a TM49 Leech Fang. He’ll also surprise you one last time, but I won’t spoil that part for you.

Conclusion

Now that you have solved the Redwood Gym puzzle, defeated Gym Leader Benjamin, and acquired the Time Badge, you have everything you need to enter the Borrius Pokemon League. It’s time to rally your ultimate team and make your way to Victory Road, where tougher challenges await.
