Every region in Pokemon has a famous pseudo-legendary that can dominate on any battlefield. For Emerald, that would be the soaring dragon, Salamence.

With its massive wings and intimidating roar, you would never guess that this Pokemon comes from a cute Bagon.

However, besides their strength and power, pseudo-legendaries like Salamence are also known to be very hard to train and capture.

In this guide, I’ll show you where to catch Bagon in Pokemon Emerald.

Where to Find Bagon in Pokemon Emerald?

Bagon can be found and caught on Meteor Falls. This cave system is located in western Hoenn, is known for its cascading waterfalls, and serves as this rare Pokemon’s home.

However, you need to meet specific requirements and go to a specific part of the cave to find Bagon.

Step-by-Step Guide for Finding Bagon

Things You’ll Need:

  • A Pokemon that knows Surf and Waterfall outside of battle.
  • Ultra Balls/ Timer Balls
  • Repels (Optional)
  • False Swiper (Optional)
  • Hyper Potions or Full Restores (Optional) to use in Meteor Falls

Step 1: Earn 8 Badges

As overwhelming as it sounds, we have no other choice but to accept that this pseudo-legendary comes at a price.

Bagon and his habitat in Meteor Falls are only fully accessible after earning your last badge, which means you can’t use Salamence on any of your gym battles.

This pseudo-legendary, however, can become a wrecking ball when used in the Pokemon League.

Waterfall can only be used outside of battle after defeating Juan and earning the Rain Badge. To do that, you need to get the Mind Badge first and fight Team Aqua in the Seafloor Cavern.

You also need to quell the fight between Groudon and Kyogre by waking Rayquaza in the Sky Pillar.

After the legendary bout in Sootopolis City, you can challenge Juan for the last badge.

Step 2: Prepare for Meteor Falls

After earning your last badge, it’s time to get ready for your Bagon hunt.

First, you need to bring a Pokemon that can use Surf and Waterfall outside of battle. Preferably, these two HMs should be taught to one Pokemon to free up space on your team.

You can use Linoone, as it is one of the best HM slaves in the game. Crawdaunt, Gyarados, Tentacruel, and Marill are good options as well. Just please don’t waste your Swampert with these HMs.

Bring a Pokemon that can inflict status effects such as paralysis and sleep to make your capture easier. You should also heal up and bring a fully conditioned team.

Of course, you can’t forget about your Ultra Balls. I always bring at least 10 with me to make sure I have enough to catch any rare Pokemon.

Good to know: If you want to avoid extra encounters, Super Repels are the bare minimum. Using Hyper Potions or Full Restores is also recommended as wild encounters in Meteor Falls can be tough.

Step 3: Find Bagon Inside Meteor Falls

Now it’s time to explore Meteor Falls. Fly to Rustboro City and head north to Route 115. Then, go left to the shore and head north again.

Surf upwards to another shoreline and make your way through rocky mountain terrain till you make it to Meteor Falls.

Once you’re inside, go up the first set of stairs till you find a large waterfall. Surf and use Waterfall to climb it.

North of the waterfall, you’ll find another entrance. Go inside, head right, and go upwards till you find a ladder.

After you go down the ladder, head down, then turn left, and go up to another ladder.

Here you’ll find an old man and woman. Just go past them and go upwards on the ledges.

Jump down the ledges on the far left.

Go down six of the ledges and stop. Do not go down the 7th one. Turn left and go down the ladder. Surf upwards to find another cave entrance.

Keep surfing north to find the only room in the entire game where you can catch Bagon. You can also find a Dragon Claw TM here.

There’s a 25% chance of Bagon spawning here, so it’s still quite rare even on this spot.

Step 4: Capturing Bagon

Now that you’ve found a Bagon, it’s time to put those catching skills to the test. Saving your game is a must.

Recommendation: If you’re using an emulator, utilize the in-game saving or save state feature to avoid having to look for another Bagon again in case you fail to catch it or make it faint.

Ultra Balls are your best bet when catching Bagon. Pokeballs and Great Balls will require a large amount of throws, and you might end up with nothing.

False Swipe is a good move when capturing Pokemon because it always leaves the target with 1 HP. Paralysis and sleep will also greatly increase your catch rate.

Now that you know where to find Bagon in Pokemon Emerald, it’s time to set off on your next quest.

While it is very hard to find and catch and is only available in the late stages of the game, it will be worth it once you evolve it into a mighty Salamence–the strongest dragon in all of Hoenn.
