What Is Cut in Pokemon?

If you’re already a veteran, feel free to skip ahead to the actual steps in finding Cut. But if Pokemon X and Y is your first Pokemon game, it’s worth noting that Cut is a very important HM or Hidden Machine.

This move is a normal-type attack that can be taught to your Pokemon and used outside of battle to cut some trees in the overworld.

Cut is essential to remove obstacles, gain access to new areas, and in previous generations, progress through the game.

Where to Get Cut in Pokemon X and Y?

The Cut HM is found inside a yellow Poke Ball located in the maze of Parfum Palace.

It is obtainable after beating the Santalune City Gym and you can only use it after defeating the second Gym Leader, Grant.

Here’s a more definitive process to acquiring the staple HM:

Step 1: Go to Parfum Palace

This area is only accessible after the first gym. Before trying to obtain Cut, make sure that you’ve already beaten Viola.

After earning your first badge, go to Camphrier Town. Then, take the west exit and go straight ahead till you reach a crossroads.

Choose the one going northwest and go through Palais Lane to get to Parfum Palace. You’ll have to pay a 1000 Pokedollar entrance fee to get in.

Step 2: Find Cut

Go inside the palace and go straight to another door that will lead you outside to a wonderful bridge.

Walk to your left and you’ll find a maze. Inside that maze is a yellow Poke Ball containing HM01 or Cut.

How to Use Cut Outside of Battle

Now, you can use HM01 to teach Cut to your Pokemon as many times as you like and it won’t be consumed.

You can use the move immediately in battles after teaching it to your Pokemon. However, in order to utilize it to cut down obstacles or trees, you need another gym badge.

That would be the Cliff Badge from Grant. He is located in the Cyllage City Gym just west of Camphrier Town.

He’s a Rock-type Gym Leader so get some water types ready.

What Pokemon Can Learn Cut?

HM01 or Cut is a normal-type move, which means most normal types that have something to cut with should be able to learn it.

Here are a few Pokemon that can learn Cut in the early stages of the game:

  • Bunnelby (Normal-type) – Found early on Route 2.
  • Pansage (Grass-type) – Can be found in Santalune Forest.
  • Farfetch’d (Normal/Flying-type) – Available via a trade in Santalune City.
  • Honedge (Steel/Ghost-type) – Found in Route 6.
  • Pancham (Fighting-type) – Found on Route 5

Froakie, Chesnaught, and Delphox can all learn Cut.

But before you rush into teaching your starter Pokemon a move like Cut, you should that HM moves are unforgettable and the only way to remove it is through the move deleter, which is inaccessible until way later in the game.

Cut isn’t really a strong move for battles, so you should think twice before teaching it to a crucial member of your team.

Choosing an HM slave like Pangoro or Bunnelby who can learn Cut, Rock Smash, and Strength, is more practical.

Explore More With Cut

Now that you know where to get Cut in Pokemon X and Y, you have unlocked a ton of new areas in the game.

While the game doesn’t mandate Cut to progress through the main storyline, you’ll find a lot of goodies with this move. Here’s how you can make the most out of your new HM.

  • Hidden Items and TMs: Ever came across a Pokeball on the road but when you tried to get it, a small tree that looks like it can be cut down is blocking the way?
Well, now you can. While they require a bit more effort to get to, these items are mostly rarer and some even contain powerful TM.
  • Rare Pokemon: Cut lets you explore more areas and will give you a chance to come across rare Pokemon.

If there’s a tree that can be cut down, take it as a sign that there’s something good waiting for you at the end of that path.

Conclusion

HM Cut in Pokemon X and Y is pretty easy to spot once you’re in the maze on the west side of Parfum Palace’s backyard.

, don’t hastily teach it to your starter or core team member. You also need to have at least two badges before you can use this move to cut down small trees.
